Kilmore Quay Guide for Budget Travelers

Picture
Kilmore Quay is a quaint town on the Southeastern shores of Ireland. What makes this small town worth checking out is the fresh seafood caught each morning. The main focus each year in Kilmore Quay is the Seafood Festival in July. Hundreds of out-of-towners come to try delicious seafood ranging from halibut to crab.

Be sure to check out this town when in Dublin. With an easy bus ride from the Dublin Airport, Kilmore Quay is quick 2-hour ride to the best seafood you'll ever have. The Irish know how to cook fish and chips.

Price of Services in Kilmore Quay

Hostels - There won't be any hostels in Kilmore Quay. The closest town with a hostel in Wexford. Expect to pay 18€ ($20USD) for one night in the summer time. Kilmore Quay is only 2 hours away from Dublin. I'd recommend a day trip to both Wexford and Kilmore Quay.

Food Costs - Kilmore Quay will have the same prices as Dublin. Fresh caught fish and chips will cost 8€ ($10USD).

Transportation - Transportation from Dublin Airport to Wexford will cost 29€ ($31USD) for a round-trip ticket. A round-trip ticket from Wexford to Kilmore Quay is 12€ ($14USD).

Activities - Head to the coast for some of the best fish and chips you'll ever have. The fish is caught hours before its served to you. For 8€ ($10USD) you'll get 3 large fillets of cod and a mountain of fries. Walk around the port of Kilmore Quay for beautiful photos.

Best Ways to Save Money

Book in Advance - To save some added dough, always book your transportation in advance. A bus from the Dublin Airport to Wexford (10 miles from Kilmore Quay) is 29€ ($31USD) round-trip.

Buy Food at Grocery Stores - Buy your food and beer at a grocery store. Food and beer will be 60-70% cheaper than a restaurant. Beer in a grocery store is usually 1.50€ ($2USD) per bottle (.5L). Buying food at a grocery store can be done with 10€ ($11USD) a day if you budget right.

Couchsurfing - Staying with a local instead of a hostel will save a ton of money. But don't use this site solely to help your wallet. It's a great way to make new friends who can show you the "local" spots that tourists don't know about. Couchsurfing hosts tend to ignore abusers of the system. Offer to cook a meal or two in exchange for their gratitude. I would try Couchsurfing in Dublin or a larger city near Kilmore Quay. The likelihood of you finding a surfer in Kilmore Quay is unlikely.

#1 Fresh Fish and Chips at Saltee Chipper

I love fish and chips. This is by far the best fish and chips place I've ever eaten at. The Saltee Chipper is a mom and pop shop right next to the port of Kilmore Quay. Fresh caught fish is brought in every morning for customers to enjoy.
